Endangered status does not protect the Asian elephant (Elephas maximus) from parasites. Ectoparasites, including ear mites of the Loxanoetus genus, possess the capacity to induce external otitis, a condition that may develop alongside the proliferation of other microorganisms. In Thailand, we investigated the connections between ear mites, nematodes, yeast, bacterial rods, and cocci, collected from the ears of captive Asian elephants. Moreover, a discussion ensues concerning whether ear mite infestations could initiate dust-bathing, thereby potentially leading to contamination of the ear canals with soil microorganisms.
Legally owned captive Asian elephants (sample size 64) were the subject of sampling. Ear swabs, independently collected from both ears, underwent microscopic examination for the presence of mites, nematodes, yeast, bacterial rods, cocci, and host cells. Mites and nematodes were identified at the species level, leveraging both morphological and molecular approaches.
Of the animals assessed, 438% (n=28/64) displayed the presence of Loxanoetus lenae mites, distributed across 19 individuals with mites in a single ear and 9 exhibiting mites in both ears. Of the animals examined, 234% (n=15/64) tested positive for Panagrolaimus nematodes. Ten animals had nematodes in one ear, and five had them in both. The presence of nematodes in both ears of adult elephants was significantly correlated with the presence of mites (Fisher's exact test, P=0.00278), and the same significant correlation was seen in female elephants (Fisher's exact test, P=0.00107). In addition to the above findings, higher nematode burdens showed a strong correlation with the presence of mites (Fisher's exact test, P=0.00234) and epithelial cells (Fisher's exact test, P=0.00108), and an almost significant connection with bacterial cocci (Fisher's exact test, P=0.00499).
L. lenae mites in the ear canals of Asian elephants were frequently co-found with other microbes like soil nematodes, bacteria, and yeasts, a notable association. The possible correlation between ear mites and increased dust-bathing in elephants, if proved, would represent a significant further example of how parasitic infestations can alter animal behavior.

In 2014, Ghana, encompassing all its regions, put the 2012 World Health Organization (WHO) policy on intermittent preventive treatment of malaria in pregnancy (IPTp) into practice, thereby adopting it. This policy, though implemented in Ghana, has not ensured that an adequate proportion of eligible women receive the optimal dose of IPTp, thereby jeopardizing the health of millions of pregnant women against malaria. The study subsequently evaluated the predictors of receiving three or more doses (the optimal dose) of sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine (SP) in the Northern region of Ghana.
During the period from September 2016 to August 2017, a cross-sectional study examined 1188 women in four selected healthcare facilities in the region of Northern Ghana. The process of data collection included meticulously extracting data concerning socio-demographic and obstetric characteristics, maternal and neonatal outcomes and self-reported substance use. All information was subsequently confirmed from the maternal health book and antenatal care register. The National Malaria Control Programme (NMCP) data indicates that the percentage of pregnant women who have received three or more doses falls short of the anticipated target. The optimal application of skilled personnel (SP) is significantly influenced by higher educational attainment, four or more antenatal care (ANC) visits, and the early initiation of ANC. The study further substantiated earlier reports about IPTp-SP, confirming that at least three doses avert malaria during pregnancy and enhance the birth weight of infants. Encouraging general education beyond primary school, coupled with early antenatal care (ANC) attendance, will drive a more informed and broader adoption of IPTp-SP among expectant mothers.
The National Malaria Control Programme (NMCP) targets a higher percentage of pregnant women receiving three or more doses of preventative medication, but the actual achievement falls short of the goal. To ensure optimal use of SP, higher education, four or more antenatal visits, and early antenatal care initiation are crucial.
